Cultural Significance

Sharad Navaratri honors the supreme Mother Goddess as the cosmic Shakti that animates the universe. Over nine nights, devotees worship the Divine Mother in three fundamental spiritual phases: first three days to Mother Durga (overcoming ego, anger, and internal hindrances), next three days to Mother Lakshmi (cultivating nobility, compassion, and spiritual wealth), and final three days to Mother Saraswati (illuminating supreme wisdom, intellect, and discernment).

How It Is Celebrated

Temples throughout Ontario feature daily distinct Alankarams (sacred vestments and manifestations) including Bala Tripurasundari, Gayathri, Annapurna, Lalitha Tripura Sundari, Mahalakshmi, and Saraswati Devi, accompanied by Sri Chandi Homam and Lalitha Sahasranama Kumkumarchana. In homes, families display Bommala Koluvu (stepped doll exhibits) and perform Kanya and Suvasini Pooja with thamboolam and gifts.
