Maha Shivaratri marks the auspicious night when Lord Shiva performed the divine Tandava Nritya (cosmic dance of creation, preservation, and dissolution) and manifested as the boundless pillar of radiant cosmic light (Jyotirlinga) before Lord Brahma and Lord Vishnu. It also celebrates the celestial wedding of Lord Shiva and Mother Parvati. On this sacred night of Magha Bahula Chaturdashi, planetary alignments naturally assist human spiritual energies to ascend, making fasting, chanting, and meditation profoundly potent for dissolving karma and achieving inner stillness.

How It Is Celebrated

Devotees observe complete or fruit-based fasting (Upavasa) and maintain an all-night prayerful vigil (Jagarana). Temples across Toronto, Scarborough, Mississauga, and Richmond Hill conduct continuous 4-kala Maha Rudrabhishekam throughout the night with sacred Panchamritam (milk, curd, ghee, honey, and sugar), tender coconut water, and sandalwood, offering holy Bilva (Maredu) leaves while chanting Sri Rudram, Chamakam, and the Mahamrityunjaya Mantra. Midnight Lingodbhava Kala Puja is celebrated with immense devotion, concluding with prasadam after sunrise.
